One of the most common diet related problem in third world countries is ‘hidden hunger’, a form of malnutrition characterised by deficiencies in the essential nutrients found in meat. For the impoverished mother who is unable to breastfeed her new born because she is herself malnourished, even the smallest gains in meat consumption can be vital. Getting enough protein and micronutrients is especially important for vulnerable groups. According to the UN’S food and Agriculture Organisation, just 20 grams of animal protein per person per day (the equivalent of one and a half eggs) can stave off malnutrition.
In order to combat meat malnutrition STC regularly provides meat to poor communities in Asia and Africa. Our programme also incorporates the annual Qurbani programme where we provide meat to hundreds of families at the time of Eid-ul-Adha. During our 2020 Qurbani, meat was distributed to around £4000 beneficiaries in Malawi. In addition, our purchase of live stock contributes to the rural economy as it can be the main or only income option available to poor households. For example, your sacrifice can be the reason why a parent is able to pay for his child’s school fees.
